If you trace back the legend of Subaru Tecnica International, you’ll find its seeds were planted in the dirt of a rally course – specifically, the 1972 Australia Southern Cross Rally, where Subaru first entered its Leone model. In 1980, the Leone 4WD became the first all-wheel drive car in the World Rally Championship. The official STI founding by Ryuichiro Kuze in 1988 set the stage for more victories and records, like the 100,000-kilometer world speed record set by the STI Legacy with an average speed of 138.780 mph for 447 hours, 44 minutes, and 9.887 seconds, continuously.
STI made its first competition WRC entry with a successful debut at the Safari Rally in 1990 and went on to triumph in the 1993 New Zealand Rally. The next year, STI unveiled the legendary Subaru Impreza WRC model and started a rally dynasty: second overall in 1994, manufacturers’ titles in 1995 and 1996, and a stunning eight of 14 races won in 1997. With 47 WRC wins and counting, STI led Subaru to more rally wins than any other Japanese manufacturer. This success, coupled with the heroics of drivers like Colin McRae, Richard Burns, Petter Solberg, and Toshihiro Arai, would solidify Subaru and STI among the most respected brands in the rally scene. In 2017, STI conquered the racetrack as well – the ultimate performance testing grounds of the Nürburgring, the “Green Hell.” The WRX STI Type RA NBR Special set the fastest four-door lap time ever at 6:57.5 – a record that, as of late 2019, still stands.
